New EMSC Online Courses: Pediatric Mild Traumatic Head Injury

Head trauma is one of the most common childhood injuries. In a 2 003 Report to Congress, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control targeted mild traumatic head injury as an under-recognized health threat nationally. In order to enhance the care of pediatric patients who present to the emergency department with mild head injuries, the Illinois EMSC program has developed the Pediatric Mild Traumatic Head Injury educational module.  This education encompasses a number of topics including: appropriate assessment, management, and discharge planning, as well essential patient education.  It is our hope that emergency care professionals will utilize these materials to provide optimal management rooted in evidence-based guidelines and emerging research to assure the best possible outcomes for their patients.

International Program in Occupational Health Practice

The International Program in Occupational Health Practice is specifically designed for health care providers such as physicians and nurses who provide occupational health services to employees in companies or governments around the world. This program also benefits health care professionals who provide occupational health services in other settings such as occupational health clinics, unions, or governmental agencies. Professionals who are engaged in management of occupational health services, such as technicians, engineers and managers, occupational hygienists, occupational safety professionals, and health technicians can join the program but need to be aware of its health focus. The program provides professional training for an international group of participants. It does not focus on the situation in a particular country.

The program builds on medical skills and specifically aims at improving leadership competencies for effective occupational health programs within a business environment. Often, management skills, system thinking, risk management, reporting skills, teamwork and contribution to management processes such as certifications or accident investigations are required in addition to medical skills. This program specifically addresses these company-level managerial skills and competencies so that health professionals will effectively contribute to the protection of employees and the goals of companies by preventing occupational injuries and diseases and increasing good health and human capacity.

This program is offered by the School of Public Health of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Its Great Lakes Centers for Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health is a Collaborating Center in Occupational Health of the World Health Organization (WHO). For more information on the WHO Network and the Global Plan of Action, please visit http://www.who.int/occupational_health/en/ .

The program starts on 31. August 2009 and early enrolment is recommended.  For detailed information on dates, enrolment, fees and discounts for individuals and institutions, companies, governments etc. and much more, please visit the sites below!  Please copy and paste the link below in your browser.
