What are competencies?

Each competency combines knowledge, attitudes and skills that are important for public health practice. Related competencies are grouped together in "competency groups." Related competency groups make up a "competency area."

For example, one competency area is Core Public Health Competencies. These core competencies consist of the following competency groups (click on "View" to see the competencies in any particular group):

  • Applied Epidemiology (View)
  • Public Health System (View)
  • Community Health Improvement (View)
  • Policy Development, Advocacy, and Public Health Law (View)
  • Program Development and Evaluation (View)
  • Public Health Administration (View)
  • Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (View)
  • Environmental Health (View)
  • Another example of a competency area is Bioterrorism Preparedness Competencies. This consists of the following competency groups, which are tied to public health worker roles:

  • Public Health Leaders (View)
  • Public Health Clinical Staff (View)
  • Public Health Communicable Disease Staff (View)
  • Environmental Health Staff (View)
  • Public Health Laboratory Staff (View)
  • Medical Examiner/Coroner (View)
  • Public Health Information Staff (View)
  • Other Public Health Professional Staff (View)
