This is a 3-part educational series, with each module building upon the previous session.  The purpose of this educational series, Quality Improvement in Pediatric Emergency Services aims to educate emergency personnel on their role in quality improvement and the need for incorporating pediatrics into emergency department quality improvement programs.

Each module discusses a number of topics including:

  • Module 1: EMSC A Quality Improvement Program is the introductory session and defines quality improvement (QI) in the emergency department setting; reviews the essential elements of the QI process; reviews an emergency department pediatric QI example; and identifies potential improvements based on Illinois findings from the National Pediatric Readiness survey.
  • Module 2: Quality Improvement in Pediatric Emergency Medical Services Tools, Tips and Tricks explores QI models and approach to implementation in the emergency department; discusses the QI process/team design/change management; examines communication strategies, timelines and meeting cadence; and reviews essential QI tools, tips, and strategies.
  • Module 3: From Data to Impact: Quality Improvement in Pediatric Emergency Medical Services reviews data collection and data analysis techniques; explores graphs, charts, dashboards and other visualization tools to foster shared understanding of QI projects; discusses the basics of run charts, control charts and associated terminology; and introduces dissemination of QI results through presentations and publication.

It is our hope that healthcare professionals will utilize these materials to further enhance the care of children in their own institutions through fostering a culture of pediatric quality improvement.

NOTE: Each module can be viewed separately, however it is strongly recommended that learners complete all 3 modules to obtain a full understanding of the QI process and the need to integrate pediatric components.
