The purpose of the course, Recognition of the Acutely Ill child, is to enhance the emergency care of the acutely ill child. It will cover a number of topics, including:

  • Anatomical and physiological differences unique to children
  • Signs and symptoms with which to identify a sick child
  • Common reasons for hospitalization in children
  • Application of the pediatric assessment triangle
  • The importance of an interdisciplinary approach utilized in the provision of healthcare for children

It is our hope that these materials enhance the recognition of acutely ill children and that prehospital and emergency department staff enhance their knowledge of the presentation of children who are critically ill, facilitating timely care and stabilization.
